Haglund’s Deformity

Description: A bump on the back of the heel accompanied by redness and swelling where the Achilles Tendon attaches to the heel. This is caused by a bony spur (see diagram) caused by a rigid back of a shoe or boot. Heredity can make a person prone to this condition.

Treatment: The first thing is to wear a shoe that puts no pressure on this part of the foot. Heel pads and orthoses will reduce the pressure. Anti inflammatory drugs and ice packs may reduce the pain and the swelling. Active Life Podiatry will advise on helpful exercises to relieve the tension from the Achilles tendon.
