Definition: Plantar Neuromas are benign growths of the nerve tissue between the metatarsal heads. The cause is not always clear but hypermobility of the metatarsals during walking or running can contribute. Wearing high heels compresses the nerves that run between them. Symptoms include: a sharp pain in the foot, shooting leg pains, tingling, a burning sensation or numbness.
Treatment: Correction of any misalignment using insoles or orthotics. In addition, steroid injection or acupuncture can help. If these fail to alleviate the problem, surgery is recommended.
