Definition: The posterior tibial tendon supports the foot while walking. If the tendon is impaired, there will be some pain, swelling and flattening of the arch. This is PTTD. It is the most common type of flatfoot and is usually gets worse if it isn't treated early. Later, as the arch flattens, the foot and toes begin to turn outward and the ankle rolls inward.
Treatment: An orthosis will support the arch to bring relief as will an anti-inflammatory drug like Ibubrofen. A short leg cast or boot will immobilise the foot allowing the tendon to heal. Exercising can also help to rehabilitate the tendon and muscles around the ankle. It may be necessary to modify your footwear by improving the arch support to prevent re-occurrence of the condition.
